Born in the Philippines and raised on the island of Guam, Roberto Sabas began his creative career immediately after high school, working as a visual merchandiser and staff artist from 1979-1982. He then moved to San Francisco at the age of 21 and worked at various graphic-art jobs from production and paste-up to in-house illustrator. He began working in the digital realm in 1995, learning Illustrator and Photoshop at a local community college. In 1996, Roberto began his career in full-time illustration by becoming a sole-proprietor of a commercial art studio. His bread-and-butter jobs became the sole focus resulting in many projects for sports, health, fitness, and educational publications (e.g. Human Kinetics; YMCA; USTA). In 2006, he left the career path to pursue employment with healthcare benefits for the sake of his family while always maintaining one foot in the business and a constant inner creative life that took him to other corners such as poetry, short fiction, and photography.
Recently, Roberto has resumed active and productive work in the studio not the least of which involves a major re-branding of the RobertoSabas.com illustration style especially in the realm of social media. In the works are the possible marketing of this style through limited print editions and online storefronts such as Etsy.
He lives in east central Illinois with his wife, two daughters, son, and their beagle and pom.
